If you’ve spent any time exploring the outdoors with a dog, you probably understand the excitement they bring to every adventure. They don’t care how long the hike is, how early the alarm went off, or whether it’s raining. Every trail is a new discovery, and every outing is the best day ever.
That’s one of the many reasons Oakley has become more than my hiking companion—he’s part of every story I share.
Meet Oakley
Oakley is an Australian Cattle Dog, a breed known for its intelligence, loyalty, and seemingly endless energy.
Originally bred to work alongside ranchers and cattle in the rugged Australian outback, these dogs thrive when they have a job to do. For Oakley, that job is making sure no trail goes unexplored and no creek goes unsplashed.
He’s curious about everything.
A squirrel darting across the trail?
He notices.
A waterfall hidden around the next bend?
He’s already there.
A scenic overlook with an incredible view?
He’s usually the first one to the edge—always safely, of course—waiting patiently while I set up my camera.
A Trail Is More Fun with Four Paws
People often ask if hiking with a dog changes the experience.
The answer is simple.
Absolutely.
Oakley reminds me to slow down.
Instead of rushing from one viewpoint to the next, we stop to listen to birds, watch butterflies drift across a meadow, or simply sit beside a quiet stream for a few minutes.
Some of my favorite photographs have happened because Oakley decided something interesting was worth investigating.
His curiosity has taught me to become more observant myself.
Our Favorite Outdoor Activities
While hiking is our first love, it’s far from the only adventure we enjoy together.

No matter the season, Oakley has an uncanny ability to find water.
Shallow streams quickly become his favorite place to cool off after a long hike.

While I’m focused on composition and lighting, Oakley keeps an eye on everything else.
He’s patient during sunrise shoots, curious during woodland walks, and surprisingly good at finding interesting places to stop.
🏕 Camping
Campfires might be my favorite part of camping.
For Oakley, it’s stretching out beside the tent after a long day outdoors.
There’s something peaceful about ending the day together beneath a sky full of stars.
Safety Always Comes First
As much as we love exploring, keeping Oakley safe is always my top priority.
Before every trip, I make sure we have:
- Plenty of fresh water
- A collapsible water bowl
- A sturdy leash
- Waste bags
- Healthy treats
- A basic pet first aid kit
- Updated identification tags
I also research each trail beforehand to make sure dogs are welcome and that conditions are appropriate.
Not every trail is dog-friendly, and respecting those rules helps protect wildlife and keeps outdoor spaces enjoyable for everyone.
Leave No Trace—for Dogs Too
Responsible hiking includes our four-legged companions.
Whenever we visit a trail, I follow a few simple principles:
- Keep Oakley under control at all times.
- Respect wildlife from a distance.
- Stay on designated trails.
- Pack out all waste.
- Be courteous to other hikers.
- Leave every place just as beautiful as we found it.
Nature gives us incredible places to explore. Taking care of them ensures future generations—and future trail dogs—can enjoy them too.

Just like me, Oakley carries a few essentials on longer adventures.
Inside his pack you’ll usually find:
- Water
- Foldable bowl
- Dog food
- Healthy treats
- Leash
- Waste bags
- Cooling towel (during summer)
- Small towel for muddy paws

He’s always happy to carry a little of his own gear—as long as snacks are included.
Lessons I’ve Learned from Oakley
One of the unexpected joys of hiking with Oakley is realizing how differently dogs experience the outdoors.
He doesn’t worry about reaching the summit quickly.
He doesn’t check the time.
He isn’t thinking about the next destination.
He simply enjoys being exactly where he is.
Watching him has reminded me to do the same.
Sometimes the best memories aren’t found at the end of the trail.
They’re found in the quiet moments along the way.
