There is plenty of hiking gear you can buy, but only a few items belong on every trip.
Before I step onto a trail, I make sure I have enough water, a dependable source of light, and—whenever possible—Oakley beside me.
These three things are simple, but each one solves a real problem.
Section 1 — Water
Dehydration does not wait until you are on a difficult trail. Heat, humidity, elevation, and a slower-than-expected return can turn a short outing into a demanding one.
I carry enough water for the planned hike and leave room for delays.
Section 2 — A dependable flashlight
Even a daytime hike can run late. A wrong turn, an injury, changing weather, or stopping to photograph a view can keep you out longer than expected.
A compact rechargeable flashlight takes very little space and gives you a dependable backup when daylight disappears.
Section 3 — Good company
Oakley is more than a hiking companion. He adds energy, awareness, and a little extra joy to every trail.
Hiking with a dog also means carrying additional water, watching the temperature, checking paws, and knowing the trail rules before leaving home.
