Why Every Great Hike Begins With a Cup of Coffee

There are plenty of things I never leave behind before heading out on a hike—my camera, an extra battery, a bottle of water, and a few treats for Oakley. But there’s one thing that’s become just as important to me as any piece of gear.

A simple cup of coffee.

To some people, it’s just part of their morning routine. For me, it’s the quiet beginning of every adventure.

Long before my boots hit the trail or my camera captures its first photograph of the day, I’m standing in the kitchen while the coffee brews, listening to the peaceful silence that only exists before sunrise.

Outside, the mountains are still asleep.

Inside, Oakley already knows what’s happening.

The moment I pull my hiking backpack from the closet, he springs to life. His ears perk up, his tail starts wagging, and he follows me from room to room as if he’s making sure I don’t leave without him. I don’t think he understands cameras or photography, but he absolutely understands adventure.

While he waits patiently by the door, I finish packing the last few things.

Camera batteries?

Charged.

Memory cards?

Packed.

Tripod?

Ready.

Coffee?

Now we’re ready.

The Best Part of the Morning

I’ve realized over the years that my favorite part of hiking isn’t always reaching the overlook or taking the perfect photograph.

Sometimes it’s those first few quiet minutes before we even leave.

There’s something calming about holding a warm mug while the world slowly wakes up around you. No notifications. No traffic. No deadlines. Just the promise of a new day waiting outside the front door.

It’s easy to rush through life.

We’re constantly encouraged to do more, move faster, and squeeze every minute out of the day.

Nature doesn’t work that way.

The sunrise arrives exactly when it’s supposed to.

The fog rolls through the valleys at its own pace.

Birds don’t hurry through their morning songs.

The mountains remind me that some of life’s best moments can’t be rushed.

Coffee helps me remember that.

More Than Just Caffeine

People sometimes ask if I need coffee to hike.

Honestly?

Not really.

I could probably make it through the day without it.

But I wouldn’t want to.

Because it isn’t about the caffeine anymore.

It’s about creating a ritual.

That first cup gives me permission to slow down before the adventure begins. It gives me a chance to think about where we’re headed, appreciate the day ahead, and simply enjoy a few moments of stillness before the trail comes alive.

I’ve learned that slowing down often leads to noticing things I would have otherwise missed.

A spider web covered in morning dew.

The sound of a distant woodpecker.

Wildflowers tucked beside the trail.

The reflection of the mountains in a quiet stream.

Some of my favorite photographs happened because I wasn’t in a hurry.

Oakley’s Perspective

If Oakley could write this article, it would probably be much shorter.

“Wake up.

Go outside.

Find sticks.

Repeat.”

He’s wonderfully uncomplicated.

Every trail is exciting.

Every creek deserves to be explored.

Every squirrel is worth investigating.

Watching him reminds me to enjoy the journey instead of focusing only on the destination.

He doesn’t care whether we hike two miles or ten.

He’s simply happy to be outside.

There’s something we can all learn from that.

Discovering Local Coffee Shops

One of my favorite parts of exploring West Virginia has been finding locally owned coffee shops tucked into small mountain towns.

Every place has its own personality.

Some are inside beautifully restored historic buildings.

Others sit quietly along winding country roads where everyone seems to know one another by name.

Stopping for coffee before a hike has become part of the adventure itself.

It’s a chance to support local businesses, meet friendly people, and sometimes even discover hidden hiking spots that never appear on tourist maps.

More than once, a conversation over coffee has led me to a beautiful overlook or waterfall I might never have found on my own.

Those unexpected recommendations often become the highlights of the day.

Coffee Tastes Better Outdoors

Maybe it’s the mountain air.

Maybe it’s the cool morning temperatures.

Or maybe it’s simply the view.

Whatever the reason, coffee always seems to taste better outside.

Standing on an overlook as the first rays of sunlight spill across the Appalachian ridges.

Sitting beside a quiet stream while Oakley splashes through the water.

Warming your hands around a mug near a campfire before the rest of the campground wakes up.

Those simple moments become the ones I remember most.

Not because they’re extraordinary.

Because they’re peaceful.

A Reminder to Slow Down

The longer I spend outdoors, the more I realize that nature isn’t asking us to accomplish anything.

It simply invites us to be present.

To notice.

To listen.

To breathe.

To appreciate.

A cup of coffee has become my daily reminder to begin every adventure with gratitude instead of hurry.

The trail will still be there.

The mountains aren’t going anywhere.

Sometimes the greatest gift we can give ourselves is five quiet minutes before the day begins.

Before You Head Out

The next time you’re planning a hike, don’t rush out the door.

Wake up a little earlier.

Pour yourself your favorite cup of coffee or tea.

Step outside for a moment before the day begins.

Listen to the birds.

Feel the cool morning air.

Watch the sky slowly brighten.

You may discover, like I have, that the adventure begins long before your boots ever touch the trail.

Thank you for spending a few minutes with me today.

Until next time, I’ll see you—and Oakley—out on the trail.

Happy hiking,

Emily Carter
